Club Outing - Blists Hill

Although Hoylake Photographic Society season is in Summer recession, a number of club days out have been arranged and the latest was to Blist Hill in Shropshire.

With most calling into Ironbridge early en route - to avoid getting the tourists on the bridge in their images - 7 club members met up in the Victorian Blists Hill 'town' at 11:00am on Sunday 21st August for the most recent HPS club outing.

Apart from the normal 'museum town' shops and displays, with many locals dressed in Victorian clothes, it was the annual steam fair, with many engines, big and small, together with their makers/engineers/drivers providing a lovely, friendly atmosphere. Most of the small steam traction engines were home-built; the owners clearly proud of their skills and results. As showing off their wares ( though not for sale ) they were all happy to be photographed. And Sue has promised a print to one proud engineer.

The one disappointment was the lack of iron-casting and machinery normally operating there; together with 'health and safety' catching up with the site, barring areas that are exciting and photogenic. Anthony managed to blag his way inside the barriers - though not sure if he got any extra photos?

We tended to meander around the site, sometimes meeting up, other times going our own way, singly or in pairs; very relaxing. All members thoroughly enjoyed the trip, though Pete and Ron escaped home early and missed the 'group photo'! Some example images are attached, but I suspect many more will show up within the club over the next year.

For once the weather was kind, alternating between bright blue skies and dramatic clouds, but no rain. Refreshments are a bit wanting on the site, so you are better off taking your own ( though Ron managed to get a mean bacon butty ), and the pub has some good food and beer - but not lager; unavailable in England in the 1800s - but some people still ask!

If you have not been to Ironbridge/Blists Hill before, it is worth a visit, whether for photography or not, and a great day out for (older) kids.

The new club season starts soon, so watch for emails and keep looking at the website and Facebook page. We also may be planning a trip to Anglesey, culminating in sunset at South Stack (weather permitting). If so, you will be emailed.
